Thrissur, the cutural capital of Kerala situated in the central part of Kerala state. Thrissur district was formed on July 1, 1949.The name “Thrissur” is the abbreviated anglicized form of the Malayalam word "Thrissivaperur"(Thiru-siva-perur) which means the town of the "Sacred Siva". Another interpretation is 'Tri-shiva-peroor' or the big land with 3 Shiva temples, which refers to the three places where Lord Shiva resides - namely Vadakkumnathan Temple, Poonkunnam Siva Temple and Peruvanam Siva temple. The town is built on an elevated ground, at the apex of which is the famous "Vadakkumnathan" Temple with Shiva as its presiding deity. Thrissur is also Known as "Vrishabhadripuram" and "Kailasam"(Kailasam Of South) in ancient days, Thrissur is a place of great antiquity. Thrissur District has played a significant part in the political history of south India.
Today, Thrissur is world famous for its Pooram Festival, which is one of the
biggest festivals of Kerala. Built around a hillock top, Thrissur houses the
Kerala Kala Mandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Nataka
Academy,Kerala Lalitkala Academy, the Thrissur Museum, the Archaeological
Museum, etc. Thrissur also has some of the best educational institutions in the
State. Thrissur also lead in women's education with its plethora of colleges and
schools run mostly by the Church. The town is also famous for its gold and
jewellery business.
